Trials

All students who register, will be placed in a team, however in order to ensure your child is placed in the team that is right for them, trials will take place.

Semester One trials will take place from Tuesday 28-30 January 2025.

An email will be sent out post Friday 24 January to inform you of your child’s specific trial time. If your child is then needed for a further trial in this week, you will be notified by email the evening after their trial.

All trials will be held in the school gym. Students are to wear sports clothing, have appropriate footwear, and remember their drink bottle. Players will not be able to trial in bare feet.

Please note: If your child is a beginner, they do not need to attend trials, they will be placed in a beginner team. However, if they wish to be considered for a higher team, they can attend the trial.

If your child is away across these dates, please indicate this in the registration.

While we appreciate the support from parents, due to the format of the trials it is advised that parents do not attend.

Training

Training days: Either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday

Time: After school

Location: The NX Gym

Specific days and times will be dependent on which team each student is placed in.

Please note – Training days and times may change between semester 1 and 2.

Selection process

We go through a very thorough selection process to finalise our teams and players will be placed in a team that our selectors have determined best suits their ability and experience. While inevitably there will be some movement of players, both up and down teams, it is important to remember that this movement can be a result of the following factors:

  • New players who did not play last year can create movement for other players, especially if they are placed in a higher team, resulting in other players moving to a lower team.
  • Individual development and growth over the summer months. If individual players have put in an extra effort and completed additional training over the holiday, this can definitely show during trials, resulting in higher performance on the court and some movement between teams.

We understand that some students will have questions regarding the trial process and eventually the team selection – if your child does, please ask them to see Anna in the sports office.

As per our Sports Selection Policy, no correspondence regarding team selection will be entered into. If you wish to view it, please download the document at the bottom of this page.

If you have any basketball queries, please email basketball@northcross.school.nz

Coaches, managers & umpires

Each Basketball team will need a coach and manager. If we cannot get enough coaches we will have to reduce the number of teams and unfortunately some children may miss out on playing.

If you are interested in being a coach or manager for Basketball, please indicate this on registration.

Please note: All coaches and managers are required to be police vetted by Northcross. The relevant forms and instructions will be emailed out to you to be completed and returned in a prompt fashion. If you have previously been vetted by Northcross, we will advise if further action is required.
