After months of team training and build up, we were as ready as we could be to bring back the AIMS trophy. We had an outstanding group of players and it was evident after the first couple of games at AIMS that if we played our game we could get to the semi’s. A lofty goal considering there were 68 other teams also vying for top positions. We accomplished our first goal to finish top in our pool (scoring 52 goals and only conceding one) then had a good win in the knock-out game against Mt Manganui to take us to the quarter final against Balmoral. The game was very tight but the lads stepped up to the challenge and won the game 3-2. After a close call against Balmoral we were to take on our rivals Murrays Bay in the semi’s. Although NX dominated the game it was difficult to break down their 5 player defensive line and the game went to shootouts. Each of our penalty takers stepped up the mark placing the ball with precision and composure. Even more incredible was our goalie Jack Powers 3 amazing saves winning the game and progressing to the final where we were to take on an in form Sacred Heart side, who were also unbeaten. The big spectator crowd added to the atmosphere and it proved to be a thrilling final with attack after attack and dogged defence from both sides. There were moments that will never be forgotten, Orlando’s left foot volley which was just palmed away inches over the cross bar, Porter Eddy’s 30 m shot hitting the top right Goal post and without a doubt Carlos’s chip over the keeper that gave us the 1-0 lead and proving the winning goal. We had achieved an amazing result–1st Place in NZ. The memories will last a life time.
