Principal’s Message

Recently I read an article written by journalist Kerre Woodham, titled; ‘What’s The Point in Keeping Intermediate Schools’ (13/09/2024); maintaining Intermediates have no clear educational philosophy. While ideas for educational reform can often spark valuable discussion, it’s crucial to remember the unique and significant role that Northcross Intermediate plays in the lives of our students and community.

The Value of Intermediate Education:

Intermediate schools, like Northcross, are designed to bridge the gap between primary and secondary education. This pivotal stage allows our Year 7 and 8 students to experience a tailored learning environment that focuses on their developmental needs. Our curriculum is shaped to foster not just academic growth but also social and emotional development, helping our students transition confidently not only into their secondary years but also contribute positively to society in the future.

A Holistic Approach: At Northcross, we are fortunate to have dedicated educators who are not just teachers, but mentors and role models. They understand the unique challenges of the emerging adolescence and provide the support our students need during this transformative time. The relationships built over the 2 years is foundational, allowing students to find and explore their strengths, develop their skills, and cultivate a sense of belonging.

Community and Belonging: Our school is not just a place of learning; it is a community hub. Northcross Intermediate fosters friendships and connections that last a lifetime. The opportunities for collaboration, creativity, and leadership that our students experience are invaluable. From sports teams to arts programs and leadership initiatives, these experiences enrich their education and prepare them for the future.

Innovation and Adaptability: As discussed in my previous Beacon/Ramaroa editorial regarding the Government’s educational initiatives, while it’s important to explore ways to enhance educational outcomes in New Zealand, it’s equally vital to recognise the ongoing development of our Intermediate schools. We are continuously assessing our practices and incorporating innovative teaching methods to meet the needs of our diverse learners.

The notion that we lack a clear educational philosophy is simply not reflective of our mission and achievements at Northcross. Our students shine brightly, from our cultural evening last week with our Kapa Haka group, competitors at the recent AIMS Games including National champions in Trampolining, Girls Football and the Rock-climbing team to the inspiring Science Fair contestants and Speech competition winners. Additionally, our Band Quest members and Ski team competitors exemplify the diverse talents within our community. Through our curriculum, we celebrate the wonderful community at Northcross Intermediate. Together, we can keep providing enriching experiences that inspire our students to dream big and reach their goals.

Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to our school and please enjoy a safe and well-deserved break. Term 4 starts again on the 14th of October. Please note for your calendar that Tuesday 29 October is a Teacher only Day.

Nga mihi nui,

Jonathon Tredray
